Brisbane, Australia's third largest city, will host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. An Australian delegation took part in a series of visits to the capital to identify ways of making their Games a sporting, sustainable and inclusive event.

Inspiring

Several tours were offered to foreign delegations attending the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Developed and operated in collaboration with several of the city's operational departments, they were designed to foster significant transformations during the term of office.
The Australian delegation was particularly involved. Before becoming the host city for the Brisbane 2032 Games, it's important to appreciate the scale of the urban transformations involved in staging an Olympiad, and the importance of the Games' legacy. The metamorphosis of Porte de la Chapelle, with its new 8,000-seat Arena and local sports facilities, impressed visitors. As were Paris' efforts to promote cycling, make the Seine swimmable and reduce the use of single-use plastic.
The Australian delegation took part in the following courses:
  • Olympics and cycling facilities: The Plan Vélo 2021-2026 further increases the presence of cycling and continues the construction of the cycling city initiated twenty years ago. For the Paris Games, the aim is to accelerate the ecological transition, notably through the creation of an Olympic cycling network and an increased supply of bicycles and parking spaces.
  • Bathing in the Seine : In the face of global warming, the City of Paris has for many years been committed to making its river bath-able for its residents. Brisbane would like to follow Paris' example and make its river swimmable by 2032. As part of this project, the Australian delegation visited an exhibition on the history of bathing in Paris at the Musée des égouts (sewage museum).
  • Zero single-use plastic policy: Paris' ambition for the Games was to show that it is possible to change the situation with regard to certain highly visible uses of plastic, such as drinks, food and goodies, by offering visitors and Parisians an Olympic experience without single-use plastic.

Shared values

The themes promoted by Paris 2024, such as inclusion, accessibility and sustainability, are also at the heart of Brisbane's concerns. Both cities share the ambition of staging Olympic and Paralympic Games that leave a positive legacy and contribute to improving residents' lives.
Exchanges between representatives of the two cities were extremely fruitful. The Australians were able to benefit from Paris' experience, and discovered innovative solutions to the challenges of organizing a world-class sporting event. The visit reinforced the conviction that collaboration between host cities is essential to make the Olympic and Paralympic Games a vehicle for progress and sustainable development.

The keys to the success of the Paris 2024 Games

  • Sustainable urban transformations: revitalizing neighborhoods, creating green spaces and promoting soft modes of transport. The infrastructure and facilities created for the Paris 2024 Games must serve the population after the event.
  • A strong commitment to the environment: Reducing our carbon footprint, fighting plastic pollution and promoting circular economies.
  • An inclusive approach: The Games must be accessible to all and help to reduce inequalities.
  • A great popular celebration: The City's ambition to make the Paris 2024 Games a great popular celebration was realized through the installation of numerous free festive zones open to all in the various Parisian arrondissements. In particular, the Australian delegations were able to discover the Terrasse des Jeux on the Hôtel de Ville forecourt.
The two cities have agreed to continue their collaboration and share best practices to make the Olympic Games an event of change and improvement for its inhabitants.
